ANALYSIS OF PRABOWO’S SPEECH (A STUDY OF SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR ON TEXTUAL METAFUNCTION)

Abstract


This paper entitled Analysis of Prabowo’s Speech (A Study of Systemic Functional Grammar on Textual Metafunction) This paper is about Theme rheme and Thematic progression in Prabowo Subianto’s speech text using a Functional Grammar as the approach. The purposes of this study are to identify Theme rheme and Thematic progression. This study particularly focused on how Theme rheme and Thematic progression occurred in  the text. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative research design embracing the characteristics of a case study approach. The data obtained from Prabowo Subianto’s speech text. The text were analyzed based on Halliday’s perspective of Theme system and its progression. The analysis shows that the three types of Theme: Topical, Interpersonal, and Textual themes were found in the text with conventional features of good academic writings. This study finds that the prominent types of textual metafunction, Topical Theme there are 22 data. Interpersonal Theme there are 2 data and Textual Theme there are 6 data. The second analysis in the discussion is theme and rheme, marked and unmarked. Based on the analysis in Prabowo Subianto’s speech text, there are more unmarked theme with 23 data then marked theme with 7 data. And the last analysis is Thematic progression, there are Reiteration progression with 5 data. Multiple progression with 4 data, and Zig-Zag progression with 4 data.
